Nose Reshaping /
Rhinoplasty
Also known as rhinoplasty, nose surgery improves the
appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial
harmony and self confidence. Surgery of the nose may
also correct impaired breathing caused by structural
abnormalities in the nose.
Plastic surgeons usually recommend that patients wait
until they are at least 14 or 15, and possibly older
for boys, before undergoing rhinoplasty. This is because
the nose may not be fully developed at a younger age.
If you are a teen, your plastic surgeon will want to
be certain that you have thought carefully about surgery
and that the desire to change your appearance is based
on your own feelings rather than those of your parents
or friends.
Assuming you are in good health, there is no upper
age limit for having your nose reshaped. Rhinoplasty
is sometimes performed in conjunction with a facelift
or other rejuvenate surgery to correct aging changes
of the nose such as a drooping tip.
Sometimes certain breathing problems related to the
internal nasal structures can be corrected at the
same time as nose reshaping is performed. Your plastic
surgeon will be able to help you determine whether
these structures should be modified along with reshaping
your nose.
The Best Candidates for Rhinoplasty
The best candidates are those looking for improvement,
not perfection, in the way they look. Rhinoplasty can
enhance your appearance and self-image, but it will
not make you look like a movie star. Those that are
physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have
realistic expectations make the best candidates. Age
can also be a consideration. Most doctors prefer not
to operate on teenagers until after they have completed
their growth spurt. It is also important to consider
the teen's emotional state and if surgery is what they,
and not their parents, truly want.
Considerations Before Rhinoplasty Surgery
Some people are not happy with the shape of their nose.
Parts of the nose may seem out of proportion to each
other or the rest of your face. You may not like the
position of the nostril. These concerns are cosmetic
or appearance related. As such they are not covered
by most insurance plans. Your option for cosmetic procedures
is not to have surgery at all. Cosmetic surgery is elective,
surgery that is designed to enhance the way you look,
not to correct a condition that is affecting your health.
If your nasal problem is great enough it may be a good
idea to have the surgery but not if you have significant
other medical problems. Cosmetic concerns, abnormalities
and appearance are real problems. They are often dismissed
as shallow or narcissistic, making individuals unhappy.
Why live with something you do not like if you can have
it changed? Many patients who elect for a cosmetic change
in appearance tell the doctor they wonder why they waited
so long and did not have the surgery sooner.
When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic
surgeon, complications are rare and usually minor.
Nevertheless, there is always a possibility that complications
may occur. You can reduce your risks by closely following
the doctor's instructions both before and after surgery.
Procedural steps
Incisions hidden at the nostril base and/or inside
the nose allow access to reshape underlying cartilage
and/or bone. This may include lowering humps, narrowing
of nasal bones, shaping of the nasal tip or nostril
size and improving the angle between the nose and
the upper lip. This procedure also can correct breathing
difficulties caused by structural irregularities.
As for scarring, when rhinoplasty is performed from
inside the nose, there is no visible scarring at all;
when an "open" technique is used, the small
scars on the base of the nose are usually not visible.
Other scars near the bridge of the nose can come from
changing the nasal bones from externally. Occasionally
a second procedure may be required-for example, to
correct a minor defect. Such cases are unpredictable
and happen even to patients of the most skilled surgeons.
The corrective surgery is usually minor.
Your results
You should see a change within 6-8 weeks following
surgery, with continued refinement for 6-12 months.
Cartilage is a flexible and growing tissue, therefore
results following surgery are not fully predictable.
